Castings: surface pores and internal defects

2D and 3D optical inspection can evaluate exposed pores, pits and contour anomalies. Internal porosity, inclusions and material soundness require X-ray, CT or another validated method. A 3D camera cannot see through metal.

How to validate

Design views around part dimensions, curvature, roughness and handling. Define separate surface and internal-defect acceptance criteria, then verify detectable defect size, repeatability and complete station cycle time.

This is a general industrial-vision evaluation guide, not a delivered IRIS ANT PCBA AOI case study or a standard machine configuration. The station must be qualified for the parts, optics and automation requirements.

Project evaluation checklist

  1. Define the item, visible inspection surfaces and minimum defects; separate appearance, internal structure and electrical or functional checks.
  2. Prepare verified good, defective and borderline samples across lots; separate training and acceptance sets.
  3. Report escapes and false calls by defect class, with review workload, complete cycle time and repeatability.
  4. Confirm program versions, permissions, retention and traceability fields; approve production only after trials pass.
