Paper and film: continuous surface inspection

Continuous surface inspection must account for width, speed, tension, texture and illumination. Suitable imaging can assess stains, scratches and visible pinholes; an optical anomaly does not directly establish thickness, mechanical or barrier performance.

Application and selection guide

Continuous surface inspection must account for width, speed, tension, texture and illumination. Suitable imaging can assess stains, scratches and visible pinholes; an optical anomaly does not directly establish thickness, mechanical or barrier performance.

How to validate

Define sampling across and along the web, then test normal texture, splices and speed changes. Associate defects with roll ID and position, and check sustained storage and alarms. Select web stations separately from PCBA AOI.

This is a general industrial-vision evaluation guide, not a delivered IRIS ANT PCBA AOI case study or a standard machine configuration. The station must be qualified for the parts, optics and automation requirements.

Project evaluation checklist

  1. Define the item, visible inspection surfaces and minimum defects; separate appearance, internal structure and electrical or functional checks.
  2. Prepare verified good, defective and borderline samples across lots; separate training and acceptance sets.
  3. Report escapes and false calls by defect class, with review workload, complete cycle time and repeatability.
  4. Confirm program versions, permissions, retention and traceability fields; approve production only after trials pass.
