PCBA components: presence, identity and polarity

Component inspection covers presence, placement, orientation, visible markings and body damage. Polarity decisions need a visible mark or geometric feature. Parts with identical appearance and markings cannot be distinguished by electrical value using AOI alone.

Application and selection guide

How to validate

Align BOM or CAD references with the sample board. Check visibility for dark parts, reflective packages and dense layouts. Retain crops and decisions for critical references, and use independent samples to verify that model updates still catch known defects.

Project evaluation checklist

  1. Define the item, visible inspection surfaces and minimum defects; separate appearance, internal structure and electrical or functional checks.
  2. Prepare verified good, defective and borderline samples across lots; separate training and acceptance sets.
  3. Report escapes and false calls by defect class, with review workload, complete cycle time and repeatability.
  4. Confirm program versions, permissions, retention and traceability fields; approve production only after trials pass.
